VALUE INQUIRY BOOKS SERIES (VIBS)
AUTHOR’S
QUESTIONNAIRE
Edited by Joseph C. Kunkel, Associate Editor
Editor for Marketing and Development
Sixth
Edition (23 November 2003)
To
the Author.
VIBS is cooperating with Rodopi in the worldwide marketing of our books.
We call upon you to participate by providing full information that will
aid your publisher in making this marketing effective.
As author or editor you are the person who best knows your work and its
place within the field; so your assistance is crucial to the publisher.
If the work has multiple authors or editors then each person needs to
complete Part One.
Please respond to all questions with
full deliberation, and answer on legible typed or word processor sheets.
Do not write your answers by hand. The
publisher prefers that you furnish this information both on paper and on
diskette; for the diskette use WordPerfect or MS Word file, not Macintosh.
Two copies of the printed material must be forwarded to the Executive
Editor with the camera-ready copy of your book; the diskette needs to be sent to
the Managing Editor of Rodopi, along with the material requested in II, 15
below, after the manuscript has been sent to Rodopi. (You will be notified in
writing by the VIBS Executive Editor when to send the diskette material to
Rodopi.) If your book is within a special series, please consult the special
series editor about marketing suggestions.
The Executive Editor will dispatch your completed paper questionnaire to
Rodopi along with other materials that accompany the camera-ready copy of your
book.

PART
TWO: THE BOOK
1.
Book Title. (Give full title
and subtitle exactly as written on the title page.)
2.
Special Series within VIBS, if any.
3.
Identify Writers of Any Foreword, Preface, Introduction, or Afterword not
Written by You as the Author or Editor.
4.
Popularly Written Abstract. (The
abstract is crucial and is likely to be the chief text used in advertising the
contents of your book. So take your
time writing it. In a double-spaced
passage of 200-300 words spell out the book’s purpose or thesis, its main
topics or fields, its organization or principal parts, its originality or main
contribution to the field, and any special features. Keep your sentences short and simple. Avoid technical philosophic expressions.
Write for the understanding of nonphilosophic librarians, bibliographers,
and members of the general public. You
might also include a seminal quotation from your preface, a chapter, or the
conclusion so the general reader will grasp your meaning and writing style.
Talk about the book, not about yourself.)
5.
Brief Summary for Back Cover. (Condense
the above abstract into a blurb of no more than 56 words. Begin with “This book....”
Use short sentences without technical words. The abstract and the blurb will be edited by the VIBS
Executive Editor and Rodopi editors.)
6.
Contributors. (If this is a
collective volume identify all the contributors and their roles for the sake of
advertising. Cite their names and
their chapter titles exactly as printed in the book.
Also give a complete list of their current addresses--including postal
code and country--so that Rodopi can send them their complimentary offprints and
copies.)
7.
Journals for Review. (List
with full addresses scholarly and non-scholarly journals that are likely to
consider announcing or reviewing your book.
Give the names of persons/departments to contact.
Be judicious in considering not only standard philosophic journals but
journals in other fields, professional newsletters, bulletins, magazines, and
local newspapers, campus bulletins, or college alumni magazines that may be
interested in your work. For
philosophic leads in the U.S. and Canada consult the directory of journals found
within the Directory of American
Philosophers. In the process
single out between 5 and 10 journals that ought to receive a review copy
unsolicited. The others will
receive notice of the book and an offer for a review copy which the journal
might accept.)
8.
Individual Reviewers. (If
individuals have informed you that they would be willing to review your book,
enter that information here with full addresses.
If you know individuals who might be willing to write comments for an
advertising flyer indicate their names and addresses.)
9.
Society Labels. (Try to
obtain a set of address labels for any relevant philosophical association for
the sole purpose of mailing an advertising flyer.
If you include a set of labels then the publisher will pay the postage.
The labels will be used for this mailing only.
In like manner you might wish to make up a set of mailing labels for this
purpose.)
10.
Internet Listing. (If you
have an internet listing like a chat-group that could be notified of the
publication of your book indicate the email address, or better give your own
email address so that you can notify the listing when your book is published.)
11.
Displaying Your Book. (Rodopi
would like to display your book at relevant conferences.
Please indicate which conferences--other than APA divisional meetings
which already have a Rodopi display--are apropos, and when and where they will
be meeting in the next year, and whom to contact.
Also list any nearby bookstores, group or university contact, book club,
or local radio station that might be interested in featuring you and your book
at a “meet the author” event, interview, or a book-signing reception.)
12.
Book Prizes. (We actively
pursue prizes for our books. After your book has been sent to Rodopi please
introduce yourself to the VIBS Editor, Prizes and Awards, Dr. Kenneth A. Bryson,
to initiate the awards process: <bryson@uccb.ns.ca>.
All suggestions are welcome.
13.
Complimentary Copies. (If
you wish copies of your book to be sent with your compliments directly to
individuals, then list their names and addresses with postal codes and
countries. The volumes will be sent from Amsterdam upon publication,
with the card “With the Compliments of the Author [or Editor],” and you will
be billed at the author’s discount of 40 percent, plus postage.)
14. Rodopi Website. (Rodopi’s
website at http://www.rodopi.nl features all new
books. For this display you need to
send your book’s Table of Contents, Foreword, About the Author, and a favorite
sample page of text, after the book goes to press. These items can be emailed to
Managing Editor Eric van Broekhuizen at <e.van.broekhuizen@rodopi.nl>. Or
they can be included on a promo-diskette using MS Word or WordPerfect, not
MacIntosh, and mailed to Eric van Broekhuizen at Rodopi, Tijnmuiden 7, 1046 AK
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. You are
also required to send to Rodopi the complete text of your book on diskette, once
the VIBS Executive Editor informs you in writing that the approved camera-ready
copy of the book has been sent to press. These diskettes will be retained in the
Rodopi office as long as your book remains in print.)
15.
Classroom
editions. If you plan to use your book in the classroom with a group of 10 or
more students, please provide the following information:
